Ibanez Tube Screamer TS-808 Reissue vs TS-9 Reissue (Video)

Although I no longer own these two pedals, they are the overdrive pedals that set the standard in the guitar world. Loved by many and hated by some, they give that classic overdriven boost with a mid hump when engaged – Perfect for allowing your guitar solos to stand out.

When I first got these two pedals, I compared them as much as I could before deciding on which one to keep and which one to sell. Well, I liked them both so much that I ended up keeping both of them! Why? The TS-9 seemed to have a lot of smooth roundness to it (like a cranked amp with mids in the mix) and the TS-808 sounded a little bit more mean with more of the “mid” warmness. So I would set the TS-9 for lighter overdrive and then kick on the TS-808 for bigger solos. They are both very similar, but I could hear and feel this slight difference. An untrained ear most likely can’t hear any difference at all.

Different people have different experiences with these pedals. As with any piece of gear, you MUST try it out on your own and not go by the opinions of others. I didn’t get rid of these two tube screamers because I found something “better”, but I found a cheaper TS-808 clone option that works better for me.. I’ll talk about this in my next blog post and you’ll see what pedal I’m talking about. Until then, enjoy the video of my TS808 and TS9 Reissue duking it out.
